See and Do

So much to do and so little time…why not stay at Hush a bit longer.

Driving Creek Railway

The train has a one-hour return trip up through the NZ native bush. The driver entertains you with stories of days gone by. The views at the top are well and truly picture worthy and once down again it is well worth pottering around the shop for a unique keepsake. The Railway is straight across the road from Hush. Ziplining is now up and running!!

Waterworks

The Waterworks is the best day out for family entertainment. Located on the bumpy iconic 309 Rd the Waterworks is a quirky fun park full of water inventions. Take your togs (bathers/swimsuit) on a summers day or even in winter rug up and marvel at the creations. Set amongst beautiful gardens and with a lovely waterhole for swimming it is well worth taking a picnic or enjoying their cafe and spending the day here. The Waterworks is a 15-minute drive from Hush.

309 Road

This road is located just as you are driving into Coromandel Town and is a gravel road that will take you over to Whitianga. It has many locally known attractions on it. Stu lives a few km along it with his wild pigs and is usually pretty happy to come out to your car and have a yarn about the pigs and his chosen alternative lifestyle. The Waiau Waterfall is worth stopping at and The Waterworks is on this road too. Whitianga side of the 309 is a large and popular fresh water swimming hole.

Gold Mining Museum

Coromandel Town is founded on rich gold mining history. Browse the Gold Mining Museum on Rings Road, just down the road from Hush.

Coastal and Bush Walks, Beaches

Where to start… if you love beaches and nature then staying in Coromandel Town is your playground. Drive in any direction from Hush and you will reach a beautiful beach. Most are tidal so the best swimming is a few hours either side of high tide but if you drive a little further on SH25 you will reach New Chums Beach and Whangapoua. Think golden sand, incredible views and often not many people at all.

There are a number of bush walks close to Hush. At Long Bay is an easier stroll and you can see the giant Kauri Trees, in town there is the Kauri Block Walk which is only 15 minutes and on the 309 Rd are a number of walks with a delightful Waterfall thrown in the mix.

For an exciting guided heritage walking tour, check out Boom, Bust and Beyond at the information centre. A fun 90 minute walk where you can explore the town and its history.

For longer walks that can even be guided, you may like to research the Coromandel Costal Walkway or The Pinnacles.

Dining and Shopping

Hush is only a 3-minute drive from Coromandel Town which is a great place for foodies. There is a huge array of dining options, both seated and takeaway. Please come to speak to Hugh in reception for recommendations.

The shops in Coromandel Town will offer everything you need but it is probably worth stopping in Thames or Whitianga at a bigger supermarket if you have specific food items in mind. The Source is also a great wee shop for a take-home gift. Be sure to visit the JewelleryART studio in the centre of town, right beside the information centre, you may just find that bespoke gift for yourself or a loved one.

Fishing

There are a number of fishing charters that leave from Te Kouma, 10 minutes out of Coromandel Town. The most popular are the mussel barges that take groups and tie up to the mussel farms with great snapper fishing to be had.

Hot Water Beach

Do not make the mistake of thinking that Hot Water beach is in Coromandel Town. It is an hour and a half drive away. Take a shovel and dig for the hot water on the beach two hours on either side of low tide. Take money for parking and do head to the cafe nearby as it has great food.

Cathedral Cove

Just like Hot Water beach this beautiful cove at the beach is an hour and a half away from Hush. Once there you can access it by walking, tour boat or hire a kayak. It is a stunning spot but in all honesty driving to New Chums Beach, Little Bay or Matarangi which are all only 30 minutes or less from Hush are just as lovely and way less crowded.

Glass Bottom Boat Tours

The only tour to explore above and below the surface, this tour is the only tour where you can view through glass panels and take in the sea life from the comfort of the boat. Enjoy a guided scenic boat tour, along breath-taking volcanic coastline, which includes Cathedral Cove, sheer cliff faces, towering pinnacles, incredible rock formations, and sea caves.
